Peres Jepchirchir, Ruth Chepng’etich, and Sifan Hassan headline the 2025 London Marathon, promising an intense battle for the title.
More elite athletes have been announced for the 2025 London Marathon with two strong Kenyan women, Peres Jepchirchir and Ruth Chepng’etich out to battle Sifan Hassan for the title.
The marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 27, is one of the most lucrative events, and elite athletes are always looking forward to competing there. Apart from setting splendid times and winning, the hefty prize money is also always on their minds.
Last year’s winner, Peres Jepchirchir, set the women-only world record, clocking an impressive 2:16:16. She will be eyeing a title defence in the streets of London since she has a fresh memory of the course. She finished third at the 2023 edition of the event before coming back in 2024 and taking the title.

Sifan Hassan has dismissed claims of being the greatest, focusing instead on improving and achieving record-breaking marathon performances.
Jepchirchir has yet to compete since her 15th-place finish at the Paris Olympic Games, where she hoped to defend her title. Injuries have slowed her down, but after confirming her place in the elite line-up in London, she is certainly sharpening her talons in readiness for the challenge.
World record holder Ruth Chepng’etich will also be lining up for the London Marathon, this time around chasing the win over Peres Jepchirchir and Sifan Hassan.
Chepng’etich has competed at the London Marathon once, in 2020, where she sealed the podium but now, it’s time for her to go for the top prize despite lining up against the two women who are well aware of the course.
The event will be her first marathon since shattering the world record at the Chicago Marathon late last year and she already has eyes on setting another record.
“The TCS London Marathon always brings together the best athletes in the world and I am sure this year will be as competitive as ever,” Chepng’etich said upon confirmation.
“Myself, Peres and the other women are strong, so it will be a competitive one and I want to prepare as best as I can and we will see if we can lower Peres’s world record of 2:16:16 from last year. With the strength of the field, I think we can support each other and maybe the world record will fall.”
In the men’s race, Olympic champion Tamirat Tola will battle it out with defending champion Alexander Mutiso. Tola has been so unfortunate in his London Marathon campaigns and maybe 2025 will be his year.
However, with the presence of Mutiso, he will have his work cut out to impress since the Kenyan ace will be looking forward to defend his title.
