- Peter Mbae, the Head of the implementation of government projects and services submitted his letter of resignation on Tuesday, January 9
- Mbae confirmed that the decision to resign from his top post had been on his mind for about six months
- He said the department he worked for faced major structural issues, and his efforts to implement change were unsuccessful
Peter Mbae, the Head of Government Projects and Services (GDS), surprised many by resigning from his post.
In his resignation letter dated 9 January addressed to the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Mbae mentioned unresolved challenges.
What challenges did Mbae face in his office?
Speaking to NTV on Monday, January 13, Mbae said he submitted proposals to his superiors after being appointed regarding the reform of service delivery within the government of Kenya Firstbut the plan was not accepted.
“We realized there are too many offices that work the same way. I said it's impossible. I said maybe we're doing this so that each office feels happy for the president. I asked if we could help the president in a better way by connecting these small things. But most of what I suggested was not done,” Mbae explained.
Mbae added that the department he was working for faced serious systemic challenges and disappointment, and that he decided to resign to protect the good reputation he had built for almost twenty years.
He said he does not want to be associated with the department if he cannot fully implement the promises made by the government of Kenya First to Kenyans.
“If the work cannot be done, I don't want to be associated with it. One day, someone will challenge me why I didn't do it. I will have my reasons, but they will ask me why I didn't talk about them earlier. I'd rather say in advance that I don't think the Department of Government Delivery Services will be able to deliver the results we promised Kenyans,” he added.
Mbae said his decision to resign was not made immediately but was on his mind for six months.
He added that because his appointment was widely publicized, he felt it was important to make his resignation public to clarify that he was no longer working in service delivery.
