Nairobi—The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, and the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Mohammed Amin, have once again failed to appear in court in relation to kidnapping cases.
Why IG Douglas Kanja was summoned to court
High Court Judge Chacha Mwita had called Kanja and Amin in relation to four people who were reported kidnapped from Mlolongo in December 2024.
On Monday, January 13, IG Kanja and the head of DCIalong with their lawyers, failed to appear in court, either in person or in person, as directed by the High Court judge.
A lawyer representing the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) told the court that he does not have any information regarding Kanja's whereabouts.
The lawyers representing the four missing persons asked the court to cite IG Kanja and the head of the DCI for contempt of court due to failure to follow the instructions asking them to explain the whereabouts of the abductees.
However, Judge Mwita decided to give the two another chance by ordering them to come to court on January 17.
Why did the judge threaten to sentence IG Kanja?
Meanwhile, Kanja, Amin and Interior Minister Kiupchumba Murkomen, failed to appear in court to answer questions about the recent saga of enforced disappearances.
The trio failed to appear when it was first mentioned on December 31, 2024.
The case was adjourned to January 8, where Kanja and the two respondents were expected to appear again to explain why the previous orders were not implemented.
Murkomen sent his lawyer, Danstan Omariwhile Kanja and Amin did not participate. The IG of police cited his concerns with other security-related responsibilities.
In an early hearing on Wednesday, Judge Luck Mwamuye adjourned the case until the afternoon to allow Kanja to appear.
The judge threatened to convict Kanja of contempt of court; this is after failure to occur again after postponement.
