‘We will explore the option’- CS Salim Mvurya on why fans may not pay entrance fee for CHAN

CS Mvurya has hinted at possible free entry for CHAN fans, while ensuring venues will be ready on time.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has remained non-committal on whether fans will enjoy free entry to next month’s African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The tournament, set to run from February 1 to 28, will see Kenya co-hosting the event alongside neighbors Uganda and Tanzania.

Speaking at a media briefing, Mvurya confirmed that the government is considering various options concerning ticket fees.

(function (v, d, o, ai) {
ai = d.createElement(‘script’);
ai.defer = true;
ai.async = true;
ai.src = v.location.protocol + o;
d.head.appendChild(ai);

Harambee Stars’ failure to make it to the Mapinduzi Cup final will not only see them lose out on a chance to win the trophy but there is also a big cash reward that they missed out on.

However, he refrained from providing a definitive answer, stating that the decision would be communicated before the end of the week.

“On the issue of the payment fee and how the fans will be treated, that is part of the issue that will be discussed by the teams here. We will be giving you a briefing before the end of the week on all those matters,” Mvurya said as quoted by Capital Sports.

The CS emphasized the importance of the media in promoting the tournament, urging journalists to help create awareness and excite Kenyans about the event.

Michael Olunga: Harambee Stars captain in tight battle for Golden Boot in Qatar

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has experienced a rare league goal drought in Qatar which leaves him fighting with many other candidates for the Golden Boot.

He described CHAN as an opportunity to showcase the country’s talent, boost tourism, and attract investments.

“Part of what I have asked the media to work with us is a sensitisation programme, which will be running through for Kenyans so they can appreciate that we have been given an opportunity of a lifetime to ensure we profile our talents, position our country as a tourism destination and enhance investments into different sectors,” he said.

Mvurya also sought to allay fears, assuring the public that Nyayo Stadium and Kasarani will be ready for the event.

“If you look at Nyayo, the major thing left to do is to erect the floodlights…and they have already put the poles in place. In the next two or three days, I expect that they will be done. The other major thing is general cleanliness in and around the stadium. I am satisfied that we are on course and I am confident that Nyayo will be ready by Wednesday,” Mvurya explained.

Tore Bobe stunned Tusker with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Gusii Stadium, breaking their ticket sales record.

The CS disclosed that the main tasks left include the installation of floodlights and the laying of grass.

“At Kasarani, work is also progressing well, and by Wednesday, I believe it will be complete because they are working round the clock. What is remaining is the installation of the floodlights…around 57 of them…and the laying of the grass, which is going on well. There should be no worries about the readiness of any pitch…all of them will be fit for use as we had planned from the beginning,” Mvurya stated.

The highly anticipated draw for CHAN will take place on Wednesday, January 15, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
