‘I know myself’- Timothy Cheruiyot opens up about handling social media pressure

Timothy Cheruiyot has revealed how he handles social media pressure especially on days when he fails to perform to the expectations of his fans.

Timothy Cheruiyot, one of Kenya’s greatest athletics talents has been in the face of adversity, not once nor twice but he has shared how he manages to keep his chin up.

Cheruiyot has suffered injuries in recent years and owing to the fact that he was just performing well before the disaster, some of his fans resorted to judging him harshly.

His injury woes started in 2022 and he has been troubled since. He went to the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon as the defending champion in the 1500m but faded to a sixth-place finish in the final.

(function (v, d, o, ai) {
ai = d.createElement(‘script’);
ai.defer = true;
ai.async = true;
ai.src = v.location.protocol + o;
d.head.appendChild(ai);
})(window, document, ‘//a.vdo.ai/core/v-pulsesports-co-ke-v0/vdo.ai.js’);

Donovan Bailey hailed Letsile Tebogo, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Akani Simbine as the future of sprinting.

Cheruiyot redeemed himself with a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games the same but the celebrations did not last long since in 2023, he failed to make the final of the 1500m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The former Olympic silver medallist also failed to impress at the Paris Olympic Games, fading to 11th place and online critiques did not let him breathe despite him stating clearly that he has an injury that has been a bother.

Cheruiyot is aware of the harsh judgement that he has been facing in the recent past but he admitted that it no longer bothers him. The Kenyan 1500m sensation revealed that he knows his capabilities and what people say about is none of his business.

“I know myself, people will talk…I know myself and my targets. During competitions, I know people always talk on social media but I always let everything go and focus on my goal,” Cheruiyot said in an interview.

“I don’t concentrate on what people say…I always talk to myself and believe in myself. There is always a bad day in the office and you can wake up when your body is not feeling well.”

He plans to switch to a longer distance this season since he has been running the 1500m for years and he thinks it’s high time he tries out the 5000m.
