‘Happy to be back’- Former world marathon record holder thrilled with comeback after five years of nursing injuries

The 2013 Chicago Marathon champion expressed excitement as he marked his return with a promise to reclaim his glory after years of injury setbacks.

Former world marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto returned to the global scene at the Dubai Marathon where he finished distant 15th but he has warned that he is just getting started.

The 2013 Tokyo Marathon champion has been a victim of injuries but that is now a thing of the past as he looks to go back to winning ways. His last race before the Dubai Marathon was in 2019 and his return to the global scene is a ray of hope for Kenyan distance running.

His injury woes began in 2015 when he only competed at the London Marathon and finished third and also failed to finish the race at the World Championships in Beijing in August. In December of the same year, he competed at the Fukuoka Marathon he could not finish the race due to a nightmare injury.

A number of Kenyan athletes did not enjoy a good 2024 season following their less than impressive performances in an Olympics year and as we start 2025, who is keen to prove the critics wrong?

In 2016, he finished ninth at the London Marathon and later confirmed that he would not be looking to represent Kenya at the Rio Olympics.

He was confirmed for the Chicago Marathon but pulled out due to a stress fracture in his left leg. In 2017, he suffered a knee injury and did not make an impact in the world of marathon running.

However, he has since confirmed that the injuries are now behind him and he is looking to bounce back and take what rightfully belongs to him.

“I’m happy to be back in Dubai and I feel good because I have finished the race…the weather and course were great. The injury is gone and everything is okay for me so next year people should be ready for me. Right, I want to go back home and then start training and then I’ll see in April where I will run next,” Kimetto said.

He is one of the most accomplished marathon runners in the world, having set the world record at the 2014 Berlin Marathon. Kimetto clocked an impressive 2:02:57 and became the first man to run under 2:03.

He now looks to go back to his original form or even better with the main focus being on marathons and this year will present an opportunity for him to showcase to the world what he is capable of.
