Kilifi: A Cessna 172 operated by the Kenya Aeronautical College crashed and caught fire in Kwa Chocha, Malindi, on Friday, January 10, killing three people on the ground.
Initial reports say that the plane crash killed the bodaboda driver, their passenger and a bystander.
The plane was reportedly on a routine training flight when it experienced technical problems that led to the tragic incident.
What did the witnesses say about the Malindi plane crash?
An eyewitness, Alberto Nyaga, told Citizen TV that the pilot appeared to be trying to control the plane by forcing it to land on the highway.

Nyaga confirmed that the people inside the plane—the captain, the instructor, and the teacher—called for help before rushing to help them out of the crash.
He said they all survived the accident and were taken to Tawfiq Hospital in good condition.
“When the plane landed, those inside called me to help them, I hurriedly broke the door of the plane and took out the first person, then that person helped me to take out the other colleagues who were not seriously injured,” Nyaga said. .
Another witness, Victor Kaudo, said that while on a motorcycle, he saw the plane crash and made him get off immediately and let the rider continue his journey.
“Only 30 seconds after I got off the plane, the plane exploded. When the rider saw that, he left his motorcycle and started running to save his life,” Kaudo said.
Video footage and photos circulating online showed the plane in flames, with charred bodies near the wreckage.
A motorcycle believed to belong to one of the dead bodaboda riders was found near the accident site.

The Malindi plane crash happened months after a Cessna 152, registration number 5Y-PSJ / 15283169, operated by West Rift Aviation, crashed on Thursday, September 18, 2024.
The aviation school later confirmed in a statement that the plane had two people on board, both of whom survived with minor injuries.
The police immediately began to investigate the cause of the accident.
