Nakuru Family Celebrates Bathidei and Cuts Cake on Funeral Day: “He Died at 106 Years Old”

A family in Molo, Nakuru county, organized a unique funeral for their loved one who died a week before his birthday.

The late Matindi Marandi was expected to be 107 years old, but fate took a different course as he died at the age of 106.

However, his family decided to hold his funeral at the same time as celebrating his birthday to honor the life he had lived well.

The sad mood in Mzee Marandi's house changed to happy when the family brought cakes and sang to celebrate his blessed life.

The deceased is survived by 12 children and more than 200 grandchildren.

His son, James Maina, explained that dying when you are over 100 years old is something to celebrate.

“We thought it wise to celebrate his 107th birthday during his funeral because, in our culture, when someone dies at that age, it becomes more of a celebration than a mourning,” said Maina in the report NTV.

Marandi's granddaughter, Margaret Gitonga, said they fulfilled her wish to celebrate her big day.

“He told us he would celebrate his 107th birthday, but for luck unfortunately he died a week before that date. So we held a ceremony on his behalf even though he is resting,” he said.

After songs and dances, the family cut a blue and white layered cake, which was distributed to the mourners and the family.

The priest who presided over the funeral mass also admitted that it was a unique mass that he had never led before.

The elderly deceased was praised as a person who preserved history and inspired his generation to achieve great things.

He was buried at his home in Ndenderu village in Turi area, Molo sub-county.

In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a family in Bomet county is mourning the death of their grandmother, Elizabeth Borett, who was born in 1890.

Mother Elizabeth died at her home in Kobel village on January 7, 2025, due to her old age.

His body will leave the Kapkatet mortuary on Wednesday, January 15, for a night of prayers before burial on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
