Mombasa – An officer of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) lost his life in a violent confrontation after allegedly refusing to pay for bodaboda transport in the Likoni area.
According to reports, the officer, whose name has not been disclosed, made several calls trying to avoid paying the fare after getting off the motorcycle at Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds.
A report by Citizen Digital stated that, when the bodaboda driver, Antony Otieno, demanded payment, the officer fired in the air with an AK-47 rifle, injuring two passers-by.
“The boda boda operator started to demand payment, but the deceased opened his small bag, took out a gun, cocked it and fired in the air to scare the boda boda driver,” the report read.
There was a misunderstanding where Otieno overpowered the officer and disarmed him, while the officer bit his nose during the chase.
“The deceased then got on a motorcycle with the intention of escaping, but the boda boda driver pulled him down. During the escape, the deceased fired several shots, but the boda boda driver was able to take the gun,” the report added.
Passers-by joined forces with the boda boda driver, which led to a violent confrontation and eventually led to the officer's death. His body was taken to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.
Police from Inuka Police Station arrived at the scene and found a gun, 12 bullets, a motorcycle, a mobile phone and four bullet casings used as evidence.
Injured passers-by were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital where they are receiving treatment while investigations continue into the incident.
