Report: China’s media industry actively promoting international exchanges

The Chinese media industry has been actively engaged in international exchanges and cooperation, according to an industry report released this week.

Titled “Development of China’s News Media (2024),” the report, compiled by the All-China Journalists Association (ACJA), indicates that Chinese media enterprises have initiated numerous programmes specifically aimed at enhancing cooperation and cultural dialogue among media organizations worldwide.

Some of the initiatives mentioned in this endeavour include the Belt and Road Journalists Forum, joint interviews and training activities, the China-CEEC (Central and Eastern European Countries) Journalists Roundtable, and the China-Mongolia Media Forum.

The report notes that the ACJA received dozens of foreign press delegations visiting China and organized Chinese press delegations to visit several foreign countries. It also signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs), for instance, with the Polish Media Association, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, and the International Sports Press Association to jointly establish the “Home of Journalists.”

Furthermore, the association hosted numerous press salons and “Journey Around China” events for foreign journalists, as well as networking activities for both Chinese and foreign journalists.

On the other hand, the National Radio and Television Administration planned and organized activities such as the “Seeing China” Africa Broadcasting Campaign, signing 12 cooperation agreements and MoUs with relevant organizations in countries including Russia, Vietnam, and Brazil. Additionally, the 2023 SCO TV Festival and the 6th China-Arab States Forum on Radio and Television Cooperation were held. The report also mentioned that a Joint China Booth was established, the China TV Theater was launched overseas, and Audiovisual Communication Week was conducted in China and partner countries.

The report highlighted that Chinese news organizations actively conducted exchanges with foreign peer institutions as well.

In August 2024, the People’s Daily organized the Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road, which released the Chengdu Initiative on Media Cooperation on Belt and Road.

“The forum was attended by more than200 heads, editors, journalists, and departmental heads from 191 media outlets in 76 countries, as well as experts, scholars, and business representatives. The forum released the Chengdu Initiative on Media Cooperation on Belt and Road, and the Third Council Meeting of the Belt and Road News Network was convened on the sidelines,” said the report

In 2023, Xinhua News Agency signed news exchange and cooperation agreements and MoUs with 33 mainstream media and government agencies in 25 countries and regions, resulting in a total of 173 contracts covering 124 countries and regions. Key foreign exchange events organized by Xinhua that were featured in the report included the World Media Summit, the BRICS Media Forum, the Plenary Meeting of the Belt and Road Studies Network, and the China-Central Asia News Agency Forum.

The China Media Group (CMG) was also recognized for organizing and participating in various forums aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration among media professionals.
