Embu: An impromptu funeral in Embu turned dramatic when mourners rejected a condolence message from President William Ruto, delivered by the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Justin Muturi.

The event took place on Friday, January 3, during the funeral of Eric Mutugi Kivuti, his son former Embu senator Lenny Kivuti, Kanyuambora area, Mbeere North sub-county.

Muturi, representing the president, took the stage and paid his respects before announcing that he had a message of condolence for Ruto of reading.

“I have received a message of condolence from Mr. President… yes? I have also sent my message of condolence to Mr. Lenny Kivuti. That is mine. I have given my message; it is not true,” Muturi told the gathering.

However, the situation changed when Muturi revealed that he was the president's envoy.

Murmurs began to reverberate through the crowd, rising as he questioned whether he should continue reading Ruto's tribute.

“Now, when I got there it said that I received a message … yes. Shall I share it with you? Do you want me to read it or not?” Muturi took a picture.

Did Muturi read Ruto's message?

When Muturi asked the crowd if he should read the message, the mourners responded emphatically and asked him not to.

“Don't read…don't read to us. Give it to the family,” they yelled, drowning out CS's voice.

After a brief consultation with some of the attendees, Muturi chose not to read the message publicly.

He referred to the late KANU-era politician John Joseph Kamotho's famous remark about a “noise vote,” jokingly admitting that crowd sentiment influenced his decision.

This is not the first time that Ruto has faced rejection by the people.

He had a brief experience of discomfort when a large part of his audience at a church event disagreed with some of his remarks in Embu.

The President joined others on Saturday, November 16, to witness the coronation of Bishop Peter Kimani in the Catholic Diocese of Embu.

While stressing the importance of the affordable housing program and the establishment of SHIF, Ruto faced opposition from the public, who mocked him for refusing.

The crowd did not allow him to elaborate on the two programs, but he remained determined to pump up the noise.

Their response showed dissatisfaction with the current administration and its policies.
