What type of cancer did Janet Wanja die of?

The 40-year-old volleyball player died of a gallbladder attack on December 26, 2025, four months after being diagnosed with the cancer, also known as adenocarcinoma.

Wanja's Requiem Mass was held on Thursday, January 2, at the Moi International Sports Hall, Kasarani Indoor Arena.

Family and friends praised Wanja as funny, kind, hardworking and loving.

His mother, Serah Mungai, described him as a unique child who blended seamlessly with people from different walks of life.

Wanja's body was buried at the Lang'ata cemetery in Nairobi in a private ceremony attended by family and a few friends.

Dr. James Ondiege wrote a touching eulogy, talking about their relationship, recalling the highs and lows.

Ondiege, the national rugby team doctor, who was close to Wanja, in his tribute, described him as “the girl who made my world go round”
