Narok – President William Ruto welcomed Ghana's president-elect John Dramani Mahama to his royal residence in Kilgoris.
The two leaders held a detailed discussion aimed at strengthening the relationship between Kenya and Ghana.
The meeting which was held on Sunday, December 29, also witnessed the presence of the ODM leader Raila Odingawhose ambition to become the chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC) was strongly endorsed by Mahama.
A video that went viral captured the moment Raila and Mahama hugged each other, emphasizing the long-standing relationship between the leaders.
Raila was accompanied by Migori senator Eddy Oketch and Kisumu women's representative Ruth Odinga.
Mahama extended his support to Raila's campaign for the post of African Union Commission (AUC) chairman, a gesture that Ruto publicly acknowledged.
“He thanked him for announcing his support for the candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission, Raila Odinga,” Ruto said.
Mahama's endorsement adds weight to Raila's bid, which has been gaining momentum across the continent.
What did Ruto discuss with Mahama?
Speaking about X, Ruto expressed hope for good relations between the two nations.
The Kenyan President revealed plans to expand cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, agriculture, tourism and mining, among others.
The discussion also focused on using the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to strengthen intra-African trade.
“Kenya will strengthen its relationship with Ghana to include more sectors of trade and investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, oil and gas. Raila says Ruto's support surprised him
Earlier, the veteran opposition leader revealed that he was surprised by President William Ruto's announcement of his support for the AU presidency.
According to Raila, he decided to run for the prestigious AU position without consulting the government, as stipulated.
The ODM leader rejected claims that the government is supporting him to deal with the political issues of the region.
