TaifaCare: Ruto Asks Parents To Ensure Their Children Are Registered With SHA When Schools Open

The government launched the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) in October 2024 after converting the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHA.

Which group of Kenyans are covered by SHIF?

Speaking during the service in the county of Bomet on Sunday, December 29, Ruto said the TaifaCare program will ensure every Kenyan is served, regardless of status.

The principal called on parents to ensure that all children are registered for the Universal Health Plan (UHC) before the school opens in January 2025.

“Since we launched Taifacare, we have received many testimonials from across the country. The Universal Health Care (UHC) program now serves every Kenyan, employed and unemployed.

“Apart from adults, we also want to include our children in this program. I ask all parents to ensure that when children report to school on January 6, 2025, they are registered with SHA to ensure their health,” said Ruto.

In August 2024, the government instructed all parents and guardians to register their children with the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

The Ministry of Education insists that the registration must be completed before the start of the third semester.

However, key stakeholders in the sector opposed the order and forced the government to halt the process.

Is the SHA undergoing changes?

At the same time, the Ministry of Health released the taxes and benefits received by members of the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

However, Kenyans raised concerns about the monthly payments determined by means and benefits.

The Ministry of Health established a committee to review the benefits and taxes of the new national health insurance.
