- The recent spate of kidnappings continues to register the government and its allies in the bad books of Kenyans
- Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka slammed his ODM party for turning a blind eye to alleged disappearances by government officials against government critics
- Some bloggers are still missing after being taken by unknown people following their posts deemed offensive by the authorities
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka is saddened by the silence of the ODM party regarding the mysterious disappearance of internet bloggers who are believed to be critics of the government.
Why Richard Onyonka is not satisfied with ODM
The senator pointed out that, following the increase in cases of missing people, the Orange party that enabled him to be elected as a senator has not been seriously monitoring the situation.
He wondered if there were several ODM officials in the President's Cabinet William Ruto made the party a branch of the government, to the extent of turning a blind eye to oppression against citizens.
“Why doesn't my party, ODM, demand that those in government stop the kidnapping of these young Kenyans? Or have we become part of the government where we are now collaborating and carrying out kidnappings on a large scale?” he asked.
Onyonka's comments came days after three X netizens went missing after posting content that authorities deemed offensive.
The youths were kidnapped in Uthiru, Nairobi and Embu county for allegedly publishing messages critical of President William Ruto.
Peter Muteti, aged 22, was abducted and put into a black Toyota Prado in Uthiru, while Billy Munyiri Mwangi, aged 24, was abducted in Embu by four men wearing masks.
Their disappearance sparked outrage on social media, with Kenyans calling for their release.
According to Muteti's girlfriend, Mary Wambui, he left their Uthiru home at 9am on Saturday, December 21, to buy breakfast but never returned.
Witnesses told him that armed men, believed to be police officers, kidnapped him and forced him into a Subaru with registration number KCF 035M.
A few hours later his phone was switched off and he was no longer available.
Also, Bernard Kivuli, a journalism student in Nairobi, is still unknown.
These incidents happened a few weeks after the Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Security, Raymond Omollo, allayed fears by saying that the government would not be aggressively pursuing its critics.
