Residents of Milimani were awakened to a disturbing discovery on Wednesday morning, December 25, after the body of a middle-aged man was found floating in the Migori River in Nyangubo village.
The body, known to be that of a man known as Mike, was found by the villagers and transported to Mochari of the Migori referral hospital.
The Deputy Chief of Milimani sub-region, Winny Abong'o, confirmed the incident saying he received information from residents about the discovery.
“When I arrived at the scene, I could recognize the body as Mike's. It was still new, fully clothed, and his phone was found in his pocket. We called the police immediately, and the body was taken to Mochwari,” Abong'o told TUKO.co.ke.
What Happened Before the Migori Man Was Found Dead?
According to Kevin Ouma, a resident of the area, Mike was last seen in Migori town at 8pm on Christmas night with an unknown woman.
“We wonder if he was killed and dumped here or if he drowned in the water because the body is still fresh,” Ouma said.
Mercy Achieng', a colleague who was working with Mike at the local market, disclosed that they were working together until the evening.
The circumstances of Mike's death are still unclear, and authorities are working to determine what happened. Steps to reach his family are ongoing.
The incident adds to the growing death toll in Migori county, where eight deaths have been reported since heavy rains began in mid-October.
The authorities have urged residents to be careful and responsible especially in this festive season when heavy rain continues to fall in the area.
