Uasin Gishu – High Court Judge of Eldoret Reuben Nyakundi has sentenced former police officer Lilian Biwott to 35 years in prison for the murder of her husband, Victor Kipchumba.
Biwott was found guilty of shooting her husband 12 times on October 9, 2023, at their home in Kimumu, Eldoret, causing his death instantly.
How the court announced the decision on Lilian Biwott's case
In his ruling, Judge Nyakundi said that Biwott, a mother of four who was serving at the Eldoret Central Police Station, committed the crime with full knowledge that it was against the law.
“Lilian used the same gun that was given to her for the purpose of preventing crime as a legal weapon to take her husband's life. This is a barbaric, diabolical, and cruel act. This is what can be described as extreme cruelty against another human being,” said the judge.
The judge highlighted the negative effects of the act on the deceased's family, especially his elderly mother, who is now suffering from depression and psychological problems.
The court rejected the claim of self-defense on the grounds of self-defense, noting that there was no evidence to show that the deceased provoked the accused.
“Lilian, you had every chance to avoid the death of your husband, the father of your children who are now orphans, but you made the decision to take the wrong path,” said the judge.
Judge Nyakundi emphasized the importance of stricter punishment to stop the increasing cases of sexual violence and murder in the country.
The sentence shows the court's commitment to deal with this type of crime and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
