KasaraniNairobi – Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the kidnapping plan targeting an Indian-Kenyan businessman.
The victim was lured into a trap after a woman, Carol, invited him to her home under the vague pretext of business.
Upon arrival, the suspect, Franklin Otieno Odhiambo, and another of his accomplices, known as Adam, suddenly entered and accused the victim of stealing from Otieno.
The group threatened to use violence and forced the victim who was full of fear to give his family's contact information.
“Once inside the yet-to-be-identified business, a woman identified as Carol signaled Otieno and his accomplice, who entered claiming that the panic-stricken stranger had stolen Otieno's property without any respect. Threatening to incite more violence if he did not comply, the gang ordered him to provide his family's contact information, where they demanded ransom money to release him,” DCI it said in part.
The kidnappers demanded a ransom for the release of the victim. In panic, the victim's family collected a down payment of KSh 310,000 before contacting the authorities at Parklands Police Station, Kabati Police Station in Thikaand #FichuakwaDCI phone number.
The DCI acted quickly, sending a specialized team led by the Chief of Operations and supported by forensic experts from the Crime and Intelligence Research Unit (CRIB).
Investigators traced the suspects to their hideout in Mirema, Kasarani, Nairobi.
When Otieno was arrested in the area, his accomplices, Carol and Adam, had already fled with their share of the ransom money.
At Otieno's residence, the police found a mobile phone used to communicate with the victim's family, which will be used as evidence in court.
“For luck of Otieno's accomplices, Carol and Adam, had already pocketed their share and gone to buy the goods when the detectives swooped. But that is not the case for Otieno, who is now in custody at the police station, struggling to find the scent of the thousands that passed through his hands,” the statement added.
The victim was returned to his family safely, expressing gratitude after the tragedy. Meanwhile, the authorities continue to hunt for Carol and Adam, who have not yet been caught.

Otieno is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, December 18, to face charges related to kidnapping and conspiracy to demand ransom.
The criminal investigation agency noted that this game of fraud, which is currently rampant in Nairobi, has caused many victims to lose large sums of money to save their freedom.
