Eldoret – Jacktone Odhiambo, the man found guilty of killing LGBTQ activist Edwin Kiprotich, also known as Chiloba, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison by the Eldoret High Court.
Why was Odhiambo sentenced to 50 years in prison?
Delivering the sentence, Judge Reuben Nyakundi described Chiloba's killing as intentional and carried out with malicious intent.
The judge emphasized that the evidence presented showed a disregard for human life.
“This was a well-planned act, evil and disrespectful to the sanctity of life. Such crimes must face the full weight of the law,” Judge Nyakundi said.
The court also acknowledged the great grief and suffering endured by Chiloba's family, noting the devastating impact of his death.
Chiloba was said to be the last of the family's lineage as he was the only son of the family.
“The family has suffered an irreparable loss. The brutal killing of Chiloba has left a void that cannot be filled,” Nyakundi said.
The judge also noted the gruesome nature of the crime, revealing that Chiloba was sexually assaulted before his murder. He described the act as a great humiliation and emphasized the need for justice in dealing with such a terrible crime.
Although the death penalty was considered appropriate for the gravity of the crime, the court agreed that it was no longer allowed under Kenyan law.
Judge Nyakundi concluded that the sentence highlights the magnitude of the crime while giving a strong message about the value of human life and the need to respect justice.
