Republic Day: Security Strengthened at Uhuru Park Ahead of Tomorrow's Celebrations

NAIROBI- Police have strengthened security in Uhuru Park ahead of the Republic Day celebrations expected to take place on Thursday, December 12.

President William Ruto and his deputy Kithure Kindiki will lead the celebrations. This will be Kindiki's first Republic Day celebration as Deputy President of Kenya following the dismissal of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.

Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei said security officers will be ready to protect all Kenyans who will attend the 61st Republic Day celebrations.

He added that during this festive period, when many Kenyans are traveling to high places for year-end holidays, the police force will fully manage their security.

“At this time and period, when we have the festive season, we will have various celebrations, we will have many Kenyans moving from Nairobi to the villages. We have made a plan to ensure that we manage their security,” Bungei said.

Uhuru Gardens has become a favorite place for Independence Day celebrations due to its strategic location and historical importance in the struggle for independence of the country.

The Ministry of Interior described the hall as having a beautiful scenery and “The best entertainment option for young people.”

“The venue's history, green spaces, and architectural design make it a great entertainment alternative for young people and the public at large, promoting Creative Careers, Entrepreneurship and Entertainment,” The Ministry said in its statement to the media.

The theme of this year's Republic Day is employment, outsourcing, entrepreneurship and entertainment, as a way to celebrate the success of freeing ourselves from extreme poverty through job creation and economic empowerment.

What happened during the 2023 Republic Day celebrations?

On Tuesday, December 12 last year, Kenyans turned out in large numbers to celebrate the 60th Republic Day of Kenya at the same venue. Before the official activities began, some Kenyans were seen fighting for umbrellas that were being given out for free due to the continuous rains falling all over the country at that time.
