Kilifi: 2 people died, 4 were injured after a trailer hit a tourist car on the road

Kilifi – At least two people have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident on the Mombasa highway.

The accident on Wednesday, December 11, involved a tourist car from the Netherlands and a trailer in the Mariakani Maji Ya Chumvi area.

How did the Mariakani accident happen?

The police report that TUKO.co.ke saw shows that two Polish citizens died on the spot, while two other tourists, their driver and tour guide, were injured and taken to the hospital after the accident that happened at one in the morning.

Preliminary investigations show that the trailer driver was trying to overtake another vehicle in a dangerous manner, causing a head-on collision with a tourist vehicle that was heading to Nairobi.

“It was on 11/12/2024 at 1:20 in the morning in the Salt Water area on the Mombasa Highway to Nairobi. Abdul Omar Mlatia was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser tourist car from Diani to Nairobi. When he arrived at the place accident, he collided face to face with a Mercedes Actros trailer driven by an unknown driver who fled after the accident, after passing other vehicles in a dangerous way.

As a result of the collision, two foreign (male) Polish passengers died on the spot (names withheld until their families are notified), and four other people were injured,” the police report said.

The road is known to be dangerous due to the high number of fatal accidents recorded every year.

The accident caused heavy traffic on the busy road as the police and a group of residents struggled to remove the wreckage of the damaged vehicles.

Photos of the scene seen by TUKO.co.ke showed people from a distance watching the incident as rescuers were pulling out people who were stuck inside the tourist vehicle.

How many Kenyans have died from road accidents in 2024?

The accident comes a few weeks after the National Police Service released grim statistics on road accidents since January 2024.

According to the police, there has been a significant increase in deaths within that period.

In 2023, from January to November, the police noted that there were 3,469 fatal accidents reported, and 3,681 for the same period this year, which is an increase of 212 (6%).

In total, in 2023, the police recorded 20,239 road accident victims, compared to 21,620 this year, which is an increase of 1,381 (7%).
