- A family from Kiambu county mourns the death of their daughter, Martha Wanjiru, who traveled to Saudi Arabia in July 2024
- Wanjiru died under mysterious circumstances, and the family claims to have received conflicting reports about his death
- Now they want the Kenyan Embassy to expedite the release of the body, describing the delay as very sad.
- Denha Ventures, the organization behind Wanjiru's action, told TUKO.co.ke that they are following up on the matter with the government
A family in Ndeiya street, Kiambu county is saddened following the death of their daughter Margaret Martha Wanjiru.
Wanjiru went to Saudi Arabia in July 2024 in search of a better life, but it seems fate had other plans for him.
The parents had high hopes for him, but received the heartbreaking news of his death in October, less than four months after the trip.
How did Martha Wanjiru die in Saudi Arabia?
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Mercy Nungari, a donor helping the family, claimed that Wanjiru's employer and the agent who sent him to Saudi Arabia have been giving conflicting information.
“His story is confusing, and it seems like his employer and agency are keeping secrets. They give different statements about how Martha died, and there is a lot of confusion from them,” he said.
According to the family, the first information they received was that he died of an illness at his employer's house, then later they were told that he died while in police custody.
“The first time they said he died due to illness while at his employer; later in November they received a call saying that he did not die in the hands of his employer but in police cells,” Nungari explained.
The Kiambu family wants the body of their loved one to be returned
Wanjiru's family wants his body to be recovered so they can bury their loved one.
“The family is afraid that the agency is not making any efforts to bring their daughter home to rest. They mourn and break down because the thought that their child is no more is too much to bear,” Nungari said.
The donor also claimed that the Kenyan Embassy is holding the body, claiming it does not have some documents.
“I have been informed that the embassy claims that Martha does not have a certificate, but they know that she is Martha and that she is Kenyan, so why should they hold her body and cause more grief to the family?” he asked.
Therefore, they are seeking information from the Kenyan Embassy in Saudi about the death of their young man as well as bringing his body back home.
Denha Ventures will speak
TUKO.co.ke spoke to Alice Wanyoike, director of Denha Ventures, the agency that facilitated Wanjiru's trip to the Middle East.
Wanyoike said they have been helping the family follow up with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about what happened and they only have a few information on the matter.
According to him, they provided all the necessary documents.
“Knowing how long it will take to return the body is between the Saudi and Kenyan governments. We have been with the family until the ministry, and we are also waiting to be told the cause of death and everything else from the government,” he said.
