Dodoma: Fear spread throughout the country after the bus carrying the MPs of Tanzania get into an accident.
The MPs were said to be on their way to Mombasa for the East African Community Parliamentary Games, where they were scheduled to participate.
Were there any casualties in the accident that happened to Tanzanian parliamentarians?
According to the statement of the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula, the accident occurred when the bus collided with a truck on the morning of Friday, December 6.
It is said that the bus was trying to pass another car when the accident happened.
About 16 MPs were injured following the incident that almost caused death. Wetang'ula added that the accident happened in the Mbande area of Kongwa district, Dodoma Region, Tanzania.
“One bus that was carrying our colleagues from Tanzania has had an accident, we have no deaths but other injuries,” said the Speaker.
Dodoma Regional Police Commander, George Kitambazi said the driver of the bus that was carrying MPs has been arrested.
He added that the victims of the accident have been taken to the Benjamin Mkapa hospital in Dodoma where they continue to receive treatment.
A former Ugandan MP was killed by a hit-and-run driver
In a separate incident, former Member of Parliament for Moroto Municipality, Simon Peter Aleper tragically lost his life in a hit and run incident on the Mbale-Jinja Highway near Bukoona, Uganda.
According to information from the East Busoga police, the incident happened on Tuesday, July 23, at 1 a.m. Aleper's V8 car collided with an unknown car, whose driver fled the scene.
The collision happened when Aleper was coming from Mbale towards his destination, and another car was coming from Iganga.
Authorities took Aleper's body to the Mulago National Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The remains of his car have been transferred to the Iganga police as part of the investigation into the fatal accident.
