Nairobi – Chaos erupted outside the headquarters of the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Kiambu Road when Citizen TV journalist, Agnes Oloo, was allegedly assaulted by a detective officer.
The incident happened before the arrival of Kiambu senator Karung'o Thangwa, who was called for questioning in relation to the disturbance at Limuru's funeral.
The area was heavily guarded, with water tanks outside the Environmental Building, the authorities preparing for protest that may occur.
Thangwa, along with leaders who lean on the side of the former deputy president Rigathi Gachaguaare being investigated for alleged involvement in the violence.
How the reporter of Citizen TV was harassed
In a video that went viral online, a man believed to be an officer of DCI he is seen confronting Oloo, demanding his camera as he prepares to record Thangwa's arrival.
The video further captured the beauty pleading with the detective, who insisted on taking his work tools before dismissing the reporter.
The footage shows Oloo pleading with the officer, who continued to try to take away his camera, threatening to break it.
“We will break it,” a police officer wearing a black suit was heard telling Oloo.
The journalist retreated for a while but resumed his duties from a safe distance, undeterred by threats.
The incident drew criticism from media professionals and the public.
Citizen TV presenter Ayub Abdikadir condemned the officer's actions, calling it an attack on the freedom of journalists.
“This direct harassment, threats and obstruction of Journalists by @DCI_Kenya should be condemned and slandered. This is a DCI officer who is trying to grab the camera of my colleague Agnes Oloo,” he said.
Stephen Letoo cried on camera
Earlier, journalist Stephen Letoo of Citizen accused the police of harming journalists during the Nane Nane protest.
On Thursday, August 8, 2024, Gen Z protests against the government rocked many parts of Nairobi, especially the central business district (CBD).
In a video that has gone viral, the police can be seen throwing teargas at journalists who were covering the protest in the Nairobi CBD area.
They threw tear gas at journalists who were in the area, and some of them were heard crying.
Letoo took to social media to call the police, saying they are harming journalists.
