A strange flu-like illness has destroyed the lives of approximately 143 people in the Panzi health area in the Kwango Region, in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
CNN reports that the deaths were recorded between Sunday, November 10 and Monday, November 25.
The disease, which has raised concerns among health authorities, shows symptoms such as fever, headache, cough, flu, breathing problems, and anemia.
Regional health minister Apollinaire Yumba revealed that more than 300 people have been infected, and most deaths have been recorded among people aged 15 to 18.
Authorities called on the public to take precautions and avoid contact with the deceased to prevent further spread.
How have DRC health officials responded to the disease?
Regional deputy governor Rémy Saki confirmed that a team of epidemiologists has been sent to the affected area to collect samples and determine the source of the outbreak.
“A team of epidemiologists is expected in the region to take samples and identify the problem,” he said.
At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) sent its team to assist local health services in managing cases and conducting laboratory tests.
“It sent a team to a remote location to collect samples for laboratory testing,” the official said.
Local leaders have raised concerns about the lack of medical equipment in Panzi, a rural health center that is already struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
The local MP also noted the urgency of the situation in his statement to Top Congo Radio, asking for medical help to deal with the growing crisis.
