Kirinyaga: A family in Kagio is struggling to lose two of their loved ones, a husband and a wife, who died in different and tragic circumstances.
How did the husband and wife die in Kirinyaga?
John Mugendi, her husband, died in police custody after being arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his wife, Catherine Wanjiku.
Mwea West Sub-County Police Commander Rashid Ali told Citizen Digital that Mugendi allegedly stabbed his wife, Wanjiku, to death before he was arrested and taken to Kiamaci Police Station on Sunday, November 17.
Ali added that Mugendi was later presented in court, where the police obtained permission to detain him for more time to facilitate further investigations.
“He was detained here at the Kiamaciri Police Station, where he was brought before the Baricho Law Court, where the police were allowed to hold him until December 9, 2024, to allow investigation,” Ali said.
Mugendi was later placed in a cell at the police station, where he was found dead on Tuesday, November 26, the same day his wife was being buried.

In a separate incident, the police in Kikuyu sub-county launched an investigation into the tragic death of a 24-year-old prisoner.
Kiragu was arrested on Friday evening, January 26, for allegedly stealing a television and detained at the Mai Ai Ihii Police Station.
His mother was shocked to hear of his death after arriving at the station on Saturday morning, January 27.
Kikuyu police commander Ronald Kirui explained that detectives were already on the investigation.
He called for calm among the bereaved family and citizens who showed up at the station to protest.
