Nairobi: It is an important day for Ruth Kamande, a woman who once gave up after being sentenced to life in prison.
This comes after Kamande, along with other prisoners and guards, graduated with a law degree.
Kamande was arrested, tried and convicted for the murder of her lover Farid Mohammed Halim. The sad incident happened on September 20, 2015, in Buruburu street in Nairobi.
What did Kamande tell his fellow graduates?
The beauty queen, beaming with happiness, was seen wearing a black prom dress, her smile radiating happiness.
Addressing his colleagues, he said that the day was special because it celebrated graduates who successfully pursued law studies while serving prison terms.
“We're here to celebrate this new story, which you've all helped to rewrite. We're here to celebrate the graduates. But we're not just here to celebrate graduates from the University of London but graduates who have successfully followed the law in prison,” Kamande said
He emphasized that the day was also meant to celebrate graduates who have experienced meaningful change, reformation, and reform during their incarceration.
“Alumni whose stories have been uniquely rewritten by all of you,” he added.
While preparing for her graduation, Ruth Kamande revealed that her motivation to follow the law came from former Attorney General Githu Muigai who offered to help her in her case.
“I wanted to find a good lawyer who could help me in my case. and someone who could understand me at the same time. So professor Githu Muigai came in, I was very touched and wished to be like him,” Kamande said.

A man sentenced to death is released after serving 25 years in prison
In a separate incident, a Kenyan man, Simon Lokwachelia, aged 49, was released after appealing his innocence in a robbery case that ended in a death sentence.
He was found guilty after being found guilty of five counts of theft and violence by the Court of Nanyuki.
