A fierce fire that broke out in the village of Kitui in the Majengo area, on Tuesday, November 19, destroyed the lives of six people and left more than 100 families homeless.

Metrine Muhonja is among the families who lost their loved ones, after her husband and their two children died in the tragedy.

Speaking to Eastleigh Voice, Muhonja told painfully how the fire broke out around one in the evening and started to spread quickly.

Muhonja recalled how he went outside to take clothes from the clothesline and noticed flames.

“I went outside to take out clothes, but when I came back, the fire had spread. I tried to go inside to save my family but the neighbors stopped me.

“They were all asleep inside, and my husband was asleep holding the children, one was 6 years old, the other 4 years old, and the last one was one year old,” Muhonja told painfully.

Unable to enter the house to save them, he watched in pain as the fire consumed everything. The bodies of his loved ones have now been found.

The cause of the fire was felt to be an electrical fault in one of the residences.

Videos shared online showed residents frantically trying to put out the fire.

With the help of the NCC Fire Department, RCATs, and Community Disaster Response Teams (CBDRTs), the fire was brought under control.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has confirmed its commitment to help the affected community at this difficult time.
