Dar es Salaam – A distraught mother mourned the death of her son, Neema Sanga, following the collapse of a four-storey building.
It all started when a sad event when it happened in Kariakoo Market Saturday, November 16.
A heartbreaking video circulating online showed a mother fainting, surrounded by friends and relatives trying to comfort her.
The incident happened when the grieving mother left her home for a joint funeral in Mnazi Mmoja.
In a video shared by East Africa TV, the mother, unable to be comforted due to grief, repeatedly cried:
“Why haven't you saved my son? Where is my son?”
The disaster, which happened at nine in the morning, killed at least 13 people and injured many others.
Residents of the area described the morning of the disaster and described the chaos and sadness when the building collapsed.
“We heard screams, and dust filled the air. People rushed to help, but the situation was shocking,” said a local businessman.
By the time this report was written, 80 people had been rescued from the rubble while 26 were hospitalized.
Why did the Kariakoo building collapse?
According to the Regional Commissioner of Dar es Salaam, Albert Chalamila, the victims suffered serious injuries due to falling debris and moths.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the upper floors of the building were used as warehouses, contrary to the original plan.
The authorities have promised to hold the owner of the building accountable while the police continue to gather detailed information to support the investigation.
The government's position regarding the collapsed Kariakoo building
President Samia Solution Hassan expressed deep regret about the incident, and assured the people that the government will pay the medical expenses for the survivors and support the funeral arrangements for the deceased.
In addition, he ordered a thorough inspection of buildings in the Kariakoo area, which is known for its many commercial activities.
President Suluhu emphasized the importance of strictly implementing building regulations to prevent such incidents.
