Newspapers: Mlima MPs Supported Removal of Gachagua Protesters and Residents

On Friday, November 15, Kenyan newspapers reported how Mt Kenya MPs who supported the removal of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua are facing the wrath of voters.

The dailies were also flooded with journalists from the Catholic bishops, who accused the government of 'cheating' and overtaxing Kenyans.

1. The Star

Some of the President's friends William Ruto they face hostility in their areas for supporting the motion to remove the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.

Voters have described the MPs who supported the removal of Gachagua as 'traitors' for removing one of them from the second highest office in the country.

Member of Parliament for Nyeri Urban, Duncan Mathenge, was scolded JuthreeNovember 11, when he was trying to address residents. Angry residents, most of them taxi drivers, claimed that Mathenge was a traitor.

Two days later, the Member of Parliament for Mathira, Eric Wamumbi, suffered from protest from its residents due to its stance against Gachagua.

Some residents have started efforts to collect signatures to remove him from office. They have accused him of failing to advance their interests.

He is also facing allegations of abuse of office and bribery during the public participation exercise to collect opinions on the motion to remove Gachagua.

2. The Standard

A man who confessed to killing women in Nakuru has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Judge Patricia Gichohi sentenced Evans Michori Kebwaro after he was found guilty of killing Diana Opicho.

Originally, Judge Hedwig Ong'udi sentenced him to 12 years for killing Beatrice Akinyi on December 21, 2021. Kebwaro confessed to killing four women and cooperated with the government as a witness.

He was accused together with Josphat Simiyu, Kelvin Omondi, Isaac Kinyanjui and Isaac Mmbolo.

Kenyans seeking outpatient services in public hospitals are stuck because of the strict implementation of the Community Health Authority Act. The law prohibits patients from entering the hospital directly in hospitals of the fourth, fifth and sixth levels.

Sick Kenyans are affected because the lower level hospitals that provide outpatient services do not have enough equipment, medicine and enough staff.

According to the new law, Kenyans should get a referral letter from lower level hospitals before getting services in level four, five and six hospitals.

“We have not prepared these hospitals for this change. Many hospitals are not even run as hospitals. Now we are forcing patients to be treated there without a proper referral system,” said Brian Lishenga, national chairman of the Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association.

Catholic bishops have criticized President William Ruto's government over alleged kidnappings and lies.

The religious leaders have also accused the government of taxing Kenyans excessively. In a statement read by Nyeri Archbishop Antony Muheria, the leaders said the government has developed a culture of lies.

Muheria said that many citizens have lost faith in Ruto's government two years after succeeding retired president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua may unite against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

This comes after Gachagua was removed from office and replaced by Kithure Kindiki.

According to the publication, Uhuru may come to terms with Gachagua to regain the political influence he lost in 2022 in the heavily-voted Mount Kenya region.

The two are planning to hold public meetings to reduce the popularity of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
