Kakamega Mother of KCSE Boy Who Died Waiting for Maths Exam Speaks: “Our Hope”

The family of a candidate for the Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 who died while waiting for the exams has spoken.

Calistus Wamboye Oteu, a student of Eburere Secondary School, died at school on Tuesday, November 5.

How did Calistus die?

The young man collapsed and died in the classroom while waiting for the start of the national exams.

His mother, Dorcas Oteu, opened up about the loss of her young son and how she got the sad news.

“Rufus, our other son who studied with his brother, called my husband Patrick and asked if we were safe at home.

Then he brought sad news about the death of our son, his brother. We were surprised. His father was weak and weak, but I gathered strength and went to school, where I confirmed the news. I was told that he had been taken to the Mission Hospital of St. Mary, Mumias,” he said.

What did Calistus' father say about his son?

Patrick said he was hoping Calistus would have a good future and change their lives after finishing his studies.

He became concerned after receiving an emergency call from Calistus' brother, Rufus, who got the news first.

“Rufus was able to continue his exams despite the death of suddenly of his brother. He was the light of the family, our hope,” he said.

Eburere Secondary School contradicts the statements of the Calistus family

However, the school denied the news of the 19-year-old boy's death, saying that he died at home.

The school claimed that he had been ill for some time, which led to his death at home and not on the school premises.

In a similar story, a family in Tigania West was grieving after losing their son, who was planning to take the KCSE exam.

The student is said to have died in the middle of the night, a few hours before the exam began.

In the same area, two pregnant women gave birth at the Hospital Meru.
