A man imprisoned for three decades after being found guilty is now enjoying a new life of freedom.
How was Thomas Mutune arrested?
Thomas Mutune was arrested in 2012 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with drugs worth KSh 5 million.
He was sentenced to prison for drug dealing, but his experience in prison changed him for the better.
he said, “I went to the Industrial Area prison, and from there, I went to trial where I was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years.”
Mutune's Experience in Prison
While he was serving his sentence, a UK-based NGO sponsored his law studies through an online program, where he became an advocate for the disabled and a sign language interpreter.
When he appealed his case, the High Court reduced his sentence to ten years.
He explained that, “While at the Committee, I met good people and they became like family. KPS took care of me like one of them.”
Mutune's Words After Leaving Prison
Mutune, who will graduate with his law degree in December, expressed deep regret about his past association with the drug trade.
He said, “Crime brings no profit; you never will. However, you enabled me to become a better person in society.”
His goal is to open his law office and provide legal aid to his community and other inmates looking for a second chance in life.
He concluded by saying, “I leave here with knowledge and humility, ready to work with the community.”
