Nairobi – Several people are feared dead following the collapse of a building in Kahawa West, Nairobi county.
On Sunday, October 20, Kenya Redcross said several families may have been trapped in the collapsed building.
The agency said rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities work to assess the extent of damage and possible injuries.
“A multi-agency response team is currently dealing with a building collapse in Kahawa WestNairobi County, where people are feared to be stranded,” a statement from the Kenya Red Cross said.
Unconfirmed reports from the residents indicate that the NCA had flagged the complex as unsafe, and people were advised to leave.
Residents had discovered a weakness in the building and mobilized people to evacuate shortly before it collapsed.
A video viewed by TUKO.co.ke captured the moment the building collapsed as residents ran for safety.
The video showed residents warning those nearby to leave shortly before it came down amid screams.
A five-storey building in Uthiru collapsed
Elsewhere, all tenants living in a five-storey building that collapsed in Uthiru on Tuesday, May 7, were accounted for.
There was fear after the building near the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) began to sink around 7 pm and trapped several people including children.
The Kenya Red Cross, which was among the first responders to the area, initially said it was unclear how many people were trapped.
However, on Wednesday, May 8, the community indicated that at least 10 people had been rescued from the rubble and treated in the area and in hospital.
