The removal of Rigathi Gachagua from office will be a historic event, as it will be the first time that a sitting vice president faces charges of no confidence in him in the history of Kenya.

What is Gachagua's last hope to save his post?

The fate of the Vice President is now in doubt as the Senate is expected to start debating his charges on Wednesday, October 16, and the final decision is expected to be made on Thursday evening, October 17.

The outcome of the impeachment process depends on whether two-thirds of the senators vote to remove him from office.

Speaking to NTVHigh Court Advocate Steve Ogolla said that Gachagua's fate is now in the hands of the Senate, following the court's refusal to suspend the Senate from continuing the debate on the charges of no confidence in him.

“This was his last chance to stop this process and he did not succeed. The truth is that his fate is now in the hands of the Senate. But, I believe he is also prepared for the Senate, we have seen that he has submitted his answers to the motion,” Ogolla said.

What will happen if Gachagua is removed by the Senate?

Gachagua's removal from office could leave a big gap in the government Kenya Firstforcing the head of state to appoint a new vice president by Friday, October 18.

“What can happen after the removal is that the president can quickly appoint Gachagua's successor. But article 149 still requires that the candidate be approved by the National Assembly within 60 days, but they can do it quickly,” Ogolla added.
