This newspaper reported on ongoing efforts to find a successor to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should the Senate remove him from power.

So far, two senior leaders of Kenya Kwanza have emerged as contenders for the position to succeed the embattled DP.

A senior government official said Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki are being taken seriously for the position.

Kindiki is given priority at the moment as President William Ruto wants to give relief to Mt Kenya MPs who chose to remove Gachagua.

“The Minister of Interior, as a senior leader from the region Mount Kenyais in a good position to succeed Gachagua to calm the region and try to provide relief to the local MPs who voted to remove DP from power. If Mount Kenya fails to get that position, the elected leaders from that area will face a lot of criticism from their voters for crucifying their son (Gachagua) and failing to have one of them inherit that high position,” said a government official.

However, other parts of the government suggest that Mudavadi should be given the position based on his experience and being the third most powerful member of the government.

“There are also other arguments that support the appointment of Mudavadi. Those who support him see that since he is the third most powerful member in the administration, with extensive experience in the government, he deserves to be promoted to the position of DP,” said the officer.

He added that if Mudavadi gets that chance, then Mlima Kenyaif possible Kindiki, should be given the position of Prime Minister and also retain his powerful post of Internal Security.
