- A group of MPs from Mount Kenya who previously supported the motion to remove Rigathi Gachagua have changed their minds
- The MPs, led by Nyeri Member of Parliament Rahab Mukami, explained that they believe the charges against the deputy president are things that can be resolved
- They also asked Gachagua to apologize to President William Ruto to resolve their differences
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua can now breathe a sigh of relief after some Mount Kenya MPs withdrew their support for the motion to remove him from power.
Which parliamentarians changed their minds?
Members of Parliament who supported the motion to remove Gachagua at first but later changed their position are Tetu Member of Parliament Geoffrey Wandeto, Member of Parliament for Pain Rahab Mukami, and Member of Parliament for Kieni Njoroge Wainaina.
Nyeri Member of Parliament Rahab Mukami told Citizen TV that she realized that the charges against Gachagua are issues that she and her boss can resolve through negotiations.
He added that he held consultations with the residents of Nyeri, who expressed their desire to ask Gachagua to remain in office.
“Kenya is bigger than all of us. I have listened to the people, and the people of Nyeri have said that they do not want the deputy president to be removed,” said Mukami.
Explaining Mukami's words, MP Geoffrey Wandeto said he consulted with his constituents, who told him that ousting Gachagua was not a priority.
He added that his voters wanted him and the government to focus on issues affecting Kenyans instead.
“As representatives of the people, it is our responsibility to listen to our people and do what they told us. So, on Tuesday I will vote NO,” said Wandeto.
The MPs also asked Gachagua to apologize to the President William Ruto to resolve any differences between them.
“Our deputy president please, go to the President and apologize. And to our President, please sit down with your deputy, talk and reach an agreement,” added MP Mukami.
Member of Parliament Embu Pamela Njoki also changed her position, saying that although she initially supported the motion, she reconsidered after consulting the residents of Embu.
Members of Parliament Mount Kenya who still support the motion to remove Gachagua are Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi, Othaya Member of Parliament Wambugu Wanaina, and Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Duncan Mathenge.
Gachagua is going to court to prevent him from being removed from power
Originally, Gachagua returned to the High Court once again trying to prevent its removal.
The deputy president claimed in court through his legal representatives that the motion to remove him was based on baseless claims.
In addition, in the request seen by TUKO.co.ke, the deputy president denied engaging in corruption to obtain unexplained wealth.
In his affidavit published on the application, Gachagua explained that the clause in the motion claiming that he owns property worth KSh 5.2 million, which cannot be explained, was fueled by rumors and lies with the aim of discrediting his reputation in front of Kenyans and his family.
