Retired Cardinal John Njue Azushiwa Death, Nairobi Catholic Diocese Denies Allegations: “He Is Alive”

The capital of Nairobi has condemned reports that Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Njue has died.

How is Cardinal John Njue's health?

Auxiliary Bishop Wallace Ng'ang'a Gichihi said Njue is alive and well, labeling the reports false.

“We want to explain in detail that these claims are completely false and baseless. His Eminence John Cardinal Njue is alive, and we ask everyone to ignore these baseless rumours,” said Bishop Gichihi.

The church asked the managers of the news to refrain, adding that any communication about Njue's health or any other important matter will be communicated through the official channels of the church.

“We ask that you continue to keep Cardinal Njue in your prayers, and we wish him good health and abundant blessings,” added Bishop Gichihi.

When did Cardinal John Njue resign?

Njue left his post in 2021 after reaching retirement age.

The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, officially accepted the resignation of the Man of God who has served as Archbishop of the Diocese of Nairobi since 2007.

In the announcement made by the Apostolic Ambassador in the country KenyaArchbishop Hubertus van Megen, the Pope appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi David Kamau as administrator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi.

Bishop Kamau served in the Archdiocese of Nairobi since December 1999, as an auxiliary bishop.

The news of the retirement and new appointment was officially announced in Rome on January 4, 2021.

The retirement of a catholic bishop is called resignation in canon (Law CIC 401).

Njue was over 76 years old at the time of his resignation, meaning he sent his letter to the Pope in 2019.
