- The former President of the Kenya Bar Association, Nelson Havi, has criticized the Members of Parliament who are planning to impeach and impeach the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
- Havi mocked the MPs, saying they failed to remove former Minister of Agriculture Mithika Linturi from office on serious charges, but now they want to fire Gachagua
- The lawyer showed that the reasons for opening the motion to remove Gachagua are not basic
The former president of the Kenya Bar Association, Nelson Havi, has ridiculed the reasons that MPs use to justify the motion to remove the Deputy President from office Rigathi Gachagua.
What did Havi say about the MPs?
In his statement on X (formerly Twitter), Havi expressed his anger and criticized members of the National Assembly.
He said the parliamentarians failed to hold the former Minister of Agriculture, Mithika Linturi, accountable for serious mistakes, including allowing the sale of artificial fertilizers and fake corn seeds.
This followed after seven members of parliament saved Linturi from impeachment, as only four of the 11 members of the committee voted to remove him, allowing him to continue in his position as Minister.
Despite this, MPs want to remove the Deputy President for what Havi believes is not a serious issue.
“The National Assembly could not remove Mithika Linturi for selling fake fertilizers and fake corn seeds but they want to remove Rigathi Gachagua for being a comedian,” said part of his statement.
This comes after 242 MPs signed a petition to remove the country's Deputy President, exceeding the 117 signatures needed to start the official process.
What are the allegations against Gachagua?
The charges in the motion against the Vice President include violation of the Constitution, violation of related laws, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
Other issues raised by MPs include his controversial remarks about Mount Kenya being partners in the government of Kenya First and accusations of inciting divisive politics in the country.
He was also accused of violating the Official Secrets Act and undermining the collective responsibility of the Council of Ministers.
Another suspicion is Gachagua's decision to blame the National Intelligence Service for the violent protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.
Gachagua claimed that the intelligence agency under Noordin Haji failed to provide important information about the protests.
