Kiambu – Union of Doctors, Pharmacists and Dentists Kenya (KMPDU) has expressed its sadness following the death of a student doctor who was working at Gatundu Level 5 hospital.
Desiree Moraa was found dead in her home in Gatundu, Kiambu county.
The police transported his body to the mortuary before starting an investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of his death.
Moraa was working in the surgery unit.
What did KMPDU say about Desree Moraa's death?
In his obit message, the doctors' association related the circumstances of Moraa's death to the environment in which he worked.
Secretary General of KMPDU, Davji Atellah, suggested the death of suddenly of the 27-year-old was caused by a systematic failure on the part of the government.
He pointed out that Moraa was confused until his death and “improper conditions that could not guarantee his safety.”
“We regret the death of Dr. Desree Moraa Obwogi, a doctor sand and a devotee whose life was disappointed. He was working as a trainer at Gatundu Hospital Level 5 under very difficult, dangerous and inappropriate conditions that did not guarantee his safety. and general well-being,” read the KMPDU statement.
Davji said the circumstances of Moraa's death spoke to the worrying mental state of health workers who have to practice in deplorable conditions and, while there, endure low wages.
“Moraa's death is a sad but clear manifestation of our country's broken healthcare system that feeds the underpaid and underpaid work of young doctors and continues to undermine their safety and basic human rights. The workplace should not make workers feel alienated from despair. believe there is no way out.” the secretary general said.
Davji warned that such unfortunate incidents will tend to increase if the government does not commit to improving the working conditions of health workers.
“It is a dangerous system that will continue to destroy the lives of health workers. We must together oppose it. We must oppose this modern slavery and oppose the failure of the embedded structures that cause such tragedies,”
The senior KPMDU member called on his colleagues to continue demanding, among other things, a working environment that prioritizes the mental health of workers, timely and fair pay, and holding accountable those who commit abuse and exploitation in workplaces, all with respect of Moraa.
Why Kenyan doctors went on strike
The death of the worker came months after the doctors participated in a 56-day nationwide strike demanding the government address their grievances.
Services in more than 50 public hospitals in the country were disrupted as doctors held their ground.
The sending of graduates to work centers and their wages are among the important issues that doctors considered in making the strike.
