William Ruto Orders New IG Douglas Kanja To Protect Police Against Threats: “I Have Faith In You”

Nairobi President William Ruto has urged the newly sworn-in Inspector General (IG) of Police, Douglas Kanja, to maintain the independence of the National Police Service (NPS).

The President asked Kanja to protect it from any kind of influence from outside.

During the official investigation of Kanja at the Nairobi House, Thursday, September 19, Ruto said that the police service has an important role in maintaining law and order in the country.

Ruto reminded Kanja of his responsibility to protect the independence of the service, warning against what he described as potential intimidation, fraud and theft.

He asked the police chief to ensure that the law is followed for all Kenyans, without bias or discrimination based on status or power.

“When you take over as IG, you have to protect the police service as an independent institution in the service of the people Kenyato ensure that all citizens are treated equally before the law. You have a responsibility as a Commander to protect the safety of citizens. NPS from any kind of manipulation, threats or injustice from any assignment and to ensure that we all respect the laws of the country and obey the laws set without status or any kind of rights we are all equal before the law.” he said.

Ruto shows confidence in Kanja's leadership

President Ruto further expressed his confidence in Kanja's ability to lead the police service with integrity and professionalism.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to supporting independent constitutional offices and ensuring that they operate without fear or favour.

“I have faith and believe in Kanja's ability to provide leadership to men and women in the police service. We will continue to ensure that all our independent constitutional offices are protected against manipulation, threats or coercion,” Ruto added.

Kanja, who takes over the reins of the police force at a crucial time, is tasked with enforcing the law impartially and ensuring that the police service restores public confidence.

How did Ruto handle the conflict between the police and the courts?

Earlier, Ruto touched on the dispute between former Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and the Department of Justice.

The President emphasized the importance of the National Police Service and the Judiciary Department to collaborate to improve service delivery to Kenyans.

The statement came a few hours after Masengeli sent a letter criticizing the Court, accusing it of interfering with its constitutional duties.
