- The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that the incident happened on Friday, September 13, in the early hours of the morning
Residents of Shauri Moyo woke up to the sad news of people trapped after the mining area collapsed.
How many died in the Shauri Moyo tragedy?
In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, the Red Cross Kenya said the incident was reported to have happened on Friday, September 13, around 2.50 am.
National Police Service spokesperson Resila Atieno Onyango said that four people have been confirmed dead, while three others were rescued and are currently receiving treatment.
Atieno added that the mission to rescue those who are still trapped is currently ongoing.
“The incident is ongoing and the operation is ongoing led by the regional security team,” he added.
The three rescued people were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital following a joint operation by the Nairobi County Fire Brigade, NMS Ambulance, Kenya Red Cross, and Kenya Police.
The workers were reported to be excavating the sewer line when the tragedy occurred.
2 people died as the sewer that was being built in Kirinyaga collapsed
In a separate incident, two construction workers were buried alive while digging a sewer at the County offices Kirinyaga.
The workers were reported to have drowned while digging the tunnel in Kutus Town when the walls collapsed on top of them.
Kirinyaga County Executive Committee Member for Public Works, Jared Migwi, confirmed the incident.
Migwi said a rescue operation was started immediately, resulting in the rescue of two workers from the scene.
He expressed his regret that two people lost their lives and added that their bodies have been transferred to the mortuary of the Hospital Kerugoya Level Five.
The two were part of the crew working for the national government contractor on the Kerugoya-Kutus sewer line.
When the incident happened, they were digging a trench to connect the sewage pipe from the district headquarters to the main sewage system in the Ndomba area.
