- Airport workers, represented by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), are protesting the possible leasing of JKIA to India's Adani Group
Nairobi – Hundreds of passengers are stuck at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The suspension of operations at JKIA is due to the strike of airport workers that started at midnight on Wednesday, September 11.
Videos of passengers stranded at the airport have gone viral online, affecting the airport's reputation.
Why is there violence in JKIA?
An inside source for the Airport Workers Union of Kenya (KAWU) confirmed to TUKO.co.ke that the strike is ongoing due to unresolved concerns about the takeover plan of the Adani Group.
Larry Madowoa popular Kenyan journalist, shared a video saying that he was hoping to fly before the workers' strike started at midnight.
Why are airport workers on strike?
For weeks, airport workers have protested the proposed lease of JKIA to the Adani Group due to the impact on their job security and welfare.
KAWU had originally planned a strike on August 19, but it was postponed to allow negotiations with the government.
However, discussions with the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and other government officials appear to have been futile as airport workers began their strike on Wednesday, throwing JKIA into chaos.
It is said that KAA staff will need to renegotiate their contracts and may face job losses if Adani Airport Holdings wins the bid to operate JKIA for 30 years.

The workers would be employed under Adani's terms and conditions, with the company also planning to include non-Kenyan workers in its workforce.
Another concern about the takeover of JKIA by Adani
Other institutional organizations in Kenya have raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the proposal to hand over the management of the airport to Adani, given that a whistleblower on platform X broke the information to the public.
Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that the Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) had raised concerns about the proposed 30-year contract for the JKIA concession.
According to IEK, Adani's proposal prioritizes City Side Development (CSD), including hotels and shopping malls, which ignores urgent needs such as runways and taxiways.
IEK cautioned that the development of the terminal and taxiway has been delayed until Phase 2 (2029-2034) and that a new runway has not been provided throughout the agreement period.
