The new friendship between the president and the opposition leader seems to be in danger as the president's team seems not to approve of the new plan.

Ruto invited MPs from Nairobi supporters of Raila on his visits to inspect affordable housing projects in the city on Monday, September 9, before meeting at the government palace.

“Good morning. I hope you have woken up well by the grace of God. Those who ignored Ruto's meeting were Nairobi senator and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna, Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch, Peter Orero (Kibra), Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Tom Kajwang (Ruaraka) and Tim Wanyonyi (Westlands).

Sifuna described the invitation as unprovoked, adding that the president did not have the authority to summon ODM MPs.

“The President does not have the authority to convene ODM members. As a Member of Parliament, I find it offensive to the doctrine of separation of powers for the President to call us the government palace,” Daily Nation quoted Sifuna as saying.

Five senior ODM officials were appointed to the Cabinet, suggesting cooperation between the opposition party and the government.

The Standard newspaper reported that the Supreme Court had suspended the proposed 30-year lease to the Indian union.

The deal, originally announced in March 2024, was intended to allow Adani to control JKIA for three decades.

By June, the government had approved the relevant aviation policies, setting the stage for the planned expansion of the airport.

Adani companies, under the wealthy Gautam Adani, should have invested more than KSh 230 billion in improving and managing the airport; then it would indefinitely retain an 18% stake in the airport's aviation business.

While the government is happy with the plan, which it says will revive the aviation industry in the country, the citizens are up in arms.

The lack of transparency, the long-term effects of leasing, and its potential consequences are among the concerns of citizens.

Civil society, including the Human Rights Commission of Kenya (KHRC) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), filed a lawsuit against the plan.

The petitioners were concerned that the lease agreement contained many procedural errors.

The events led to a sharp decline in airport workers, who opposed the plan, citing the possibility of losing their jobs.
