William Ruto Orders Inquiry Into School Fire That Killed 17 Students: “Please Be Sorry”

PainPresident William Ruto has authorized the Ministry of Interior to quickly investigate the fire tragedy that hit Hillside Endarasha School, which killed about 17 students.

The President, while consoling the affected schools and families, suggested that the fire broke out because of laxity on the part of the school.

“Ruto ordered that anyone found negligent should be held accountable.

He promised government assistance to the affected families.

“I am ordering the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this terrible incident, those involved will be held accountable. The government under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and National Government Coordination is collecting all the necessary resources to help the affected families. Please be very careful,” The President said in a statement sent to X.

The tragedy drew the country's attention with great sadness, with celebrities using social media to express their grief.

While urging training institutions to put in place systems to deal with disasters like this, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said:

“I have learned with great sadness the death of Hillside Endarasha Academy students in a fire incident in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County. We join families, schools and the whole country in mourning the souls of these young people.”

Former prime minister Raila Odinga said:

“My deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and schoolmates who have lost their loved ones in the tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha College. May God give them strength in these difficult times and speedy recovery to those injured.”

Details of the fire at Hillside Endarasha School

Police said the fire happened on Thursday evening, September 5.

National police spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed that 16 students died at the scene and were burned beyond recognition, while one died on the way to the hospital.

More than 800 students were in the school when the fire broke out.

The police spokesperson further confirmed that the fire broke out in the dormitory where the victims were sleeping.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at the time of publication of this newspaper.
