Pain – The Ministry of Education has expressed its regret following the fire incident at the Hillside Endarasha Academy school in Kieni Sub-County West.
The fire on Thursday, September 6 is reported to have started around midnight, and claimed the lives of 17 students.
The fire also injured 14 other students, all of whom are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.
In its statement, the Ministry revealed that the dormitory had 156 boys at the time of the incident.
According to the Ministry, among the 824 students of the school, 156 boys and 160 girls are boarders, and the rest attend as full-time scholars.
All 156 boys were housed in the dormitory that burned down.
“The fire caused another 14 students to be injured and they continue to be treated in various hospitals where the school has a total of 824 students, of which 402 are boys while 422 are girls and of the 824 enrolled, 156 boys and 160 girls are tenants, while the rest are full-time scholars. All 156 boys were accommodated in a dormitory that was in bad condition,” said the Secretary General of Basic Education, Belio Kipsang.
Kipsang sympathizes with Endarasha fire victims
In addition, Kipsang explained that the Ministry is cooperating with various Government Departments including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and National Administration as well as the Ministry of Health to manage the situation and ensure that the injured students get the best medical services.
He added that he was on the ground leading a team of local agencies to control the situation.
Kipsang sent the Ministry's condolences to the affected families, expressing deep sorrow at the loss of life.
“The Ministry of Education sends its condolences to the parents, families and friends of the students who lost their lives in this tragic tragedy,” he said.
