Rebecca Cheptegei, Other Athletes Killed in Suspected Love Dispute

A report by the Center for Sexual Violence states that men are the main perpetrators of violence.

The report also showed that the female population was the most affected, with 56% of women and 36% of girls reporting cases of sexual violence.

The latest tragic case of an athlete who died due to a love dispute Rebecca Cheptegei wa Ugandawho was pronounced dead on Thursday, September 5.

How did the athlete Cheptegei die?

Cheptegei died from the injuries he sustained after being set on fire by his ex-boyfriend in a brutal attack.

Earlier reports indicate the two frequently argued about the house.

Earlier, the chief of the conflict area, Rose Chebet, said that Cheptegei's ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, hid in his house on Sunday, September 1, while he was at church with their two children.

When Cheptegei returned home, he found Ndiema who had already bought petrol waiting for him. An argument broke out and led to Ndiema dousing him with petrol and setting him on fire.

Despite receiving intensive care at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital there EldoretCheptegei's injuries were too severe to survive.

He died when arrangements were being made to fly him to Nairobi for special treatment.

Samuel Wanjiru

Samwel Wanjiru was a famous athlete who won a gold medal in the marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

According to a Times report, Wanjiru died in 2011 after falling from the first floor balcony of his home in Nyahururu.

Police said that the gold medalist had earlier returned to his home with a woman he met at a local bar.

At their home, his wife intervened, leading to an argument before Wanjiru fell from her balcony under mysterious circumstances.

Agnes Tirop

Tirop was an elite athlete who won bronze in the 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships.

Her death was reportedly linked to a suspected love triangle.

Tirop was found dead with multiple stab wounds to the neck at his home in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, October 13, 2021.

Tirop's family said her husband, Ibrahim Rotich, had called them earlier and apologized for the crime he allegedly committed.

According to a Bloomberg report, Ibrahim surrendered after disappearing for several days and confessed to the crime.

He later changed his statement and pleaded not guilty.

Damaris Mutua

Kenyan-Bahrain athlete Damaris Mutua died in 2022 after hanging himself to death at his home in Iten.

The Nation report named her boyfriend Mutua from Ethiopia as the main suspect in the murder. Mutua's decomposing body was allegedly found on his bed with a pillow on his face.

Kelvin Kiptum dies in a road accident in Eldoret

Previously, Kenya it lost another star athlete, Kelvin Kiptum, although his death was due to a road accident on the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road, not a love dispute.

Kiptum and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, died in a fatal road accident on Sunday, February 11.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said the 24-year-old Kenyan athlete, who was driving a Toyota Premio, and his coach died at the scene of the accident.
