PoisonousScreams rang out at the Our Lady of Mercy Funeral Home as distraught families gathered to identify their loved ones who perished in the accident on Tuesday, September 3, Pangala area along the Londiani-Muhoroni Road.

Families are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of their relatives in the accident that claimed the lives of several people.

Many of them camped at St. Mary's Mission Hospital. Vincent, where they remembered the last moments they shared with their loved ones.

The accident is reported to have killed many students who were returning to school after the holidays.

The Otieno family should not have boarded the three that later killed them

Among the grieving families is Josh Otieno, a Kisumu resident who lost his wife and 17-year-old daughter in the fatal accident.

Otieno, still in shock, revealed that the fatal accident happened just 20 minutes after he saw his family leaving.

He said that his wife and daughter had planned to ride in separate matatus but were persuaded otherwise.

Otieno explained that the conductor of the matatu that was in bad shape insisted on the matatu, which eventually met with the accident.

“They wanted to get on another car that wasn't that one. But the conductor insisted that they have to get on that car to Kisumu. We talked a few minutes after getting on that car and after that I got a call from my son that both of them are dead,” he narrated

In a similar case, a man who survived the accident while those around him died was identified as a respected church leader and dedicated guardian of the Christian Union (CU) at Nyagoko School.

A close friend described the survivor, Daniel Osieko, as a man of great faith who had a history of inspiring others through his spiritual leadership.

Dennis Onam, a fellow teacher and lay Anglican reader, shared his surprise and gratitude about the event.
