The government has taken the case of Rebecca Cheptegei while the Ugandan athlete is now expected to be flown to Nairobi for special treatment.
Cheptegei is currently fighting for his life at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in the city Eldoret after being doused with petrol and set on fire by her Kenyan lover.
The suspect is said to have ambushed the Ugandan athlete as he was leaving church with his children on September 1 in Endebes, County Trans Nzoia. The conflict, according to his family, was a long-standing issue over a piece of land, as captured by Citizen Digital.
Cheptegei suffered 80 percent burns, with doctors describing his condition as serious. The government, through the Ministry of Sports, has now revealed that they will take that position.
The government is taking over the treatment of Rebecca Cheptegei
Sports Minister Peter Tum revealed that plans were already underway to fly the Olympian to Uganda to Nairobi for further treatment.
“We are working together to see if we can fly him from Eldoret to Nairobi for specialized treatment. We want to see that he is given the best medical care available in this country even as we discuss how to proceed further,” he said. as quoted by Capital Sports.
Tum also revealed that they are in talks with the Ugandan government, and assured that the relevant security agencies are working to ensure that justice is done.
Suspect Dickson Ndiema also suffered 30 percent burns and is still undergoing treatment.

The veteran middle and long distance runner started her career in 2010 and is the second female marathon runner in the history of Uganda.
