Alice Njeri said she endured an abusive marriage with her Indian husband, who was much older than her.

He was a gentleman, Njeri says

He knew him where he was sandadding that he waited for her to finish school before marrying her.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Njeri said she waited for him for at least seven years before formalizing their union.

“He was a gentleman. He would buy me gifts like shoes and take care of me like a queen. He was very respectful and a wonderful person,” he said.

Why did Njeri's husband refuse to pay the dowry?

In marriage four children, but friction arose between Njeri and her husband because of different traditions and cultures.

He refused to pay the dowry, saying that it is not acceptable in his culture for a man to do so, which caused a rift between him and his in-laws.

“We had already talked about it, and he was ready to pay, but he changed the story when I took him to our house. My parents were in pain, and I was very sad,” the Murang'a woman said.

A 50-year-old woman with her husband became abusive and despised her faith.

Why was Njeri's daughter sent to India?

He even wanted the children to know more about Indian Culture and not Christianity, such as the Njeri faith, which angered him.

“He was an Indian priest. He even took our daughter to India for three years to learn about their culture. He never wanted them to learn about Christianity, however he said he was the same with my faith, but he preferred his faith to mine,” he said.

Njeri said they will be under her husband's name whenever they buy property, thus leaving her out of the plan.

He withdrew from the union when he could no longer accept it after allegedly hearing the voice of God.

“True love does not exist. Love is blind and stupid. If someone tells me he loves me, he must show it in action,” he said.
