A man known as Ddamulira Godfrey has been arrested after allegedly being found with 24 human skulls.
Police reported that they believe the skulls were used in ritual human sacrifices.
The disturbing discovery was made at Godfrey's shrine, located on the outskirts of the capital, Kampala.
Speaking to the BBC, police spokesperson Patrick Onyango revealed that Godfrey will be charged under the Prevention and Prohibition of Human Sacrifice Act.
In addition to human skulls, the police also discovered animal remains and skins in the temple, intensifying the investigation.
“We are charging him first under the Prohibition and Prohibition of Human Sacrifice Act, which prohibits a person from possessing human body parts and sacrificial instruments. If found guilty, he will serve a life sentence in prison,” he said.
How did Godfrey's neighbors react to the discovery?
The local community still does not believe, as those who knew him expressed shock and surprise at the allegations.
James Kirumira, Godfrey's landlord, revealed that he had known him for over 20 years and always considered him a law-abiding person.
“The discovery of the human skull shocked us all because we all knew him as a peaceful man, and no one would have suspected him of being involved in the crime,” Kirumira explained.
Likewise, the Chairman of Kitaka Region, Sam Ssendegeya, expressed his surprise at the incident.
According to Ssendegeya, when Ddamulira arrived in the village for the first time, he introduced himself as a traditional person and even provided documents to prove his responsibility.
17 human skulls are discovered from the alleged graves
In a related incident, two children who went to look for firewood in the village of Kubanga discovered 17 skulls buried in a metal box.
The shrine is suspected to be owned by Tabusa Bbosa Lujja, the main suspect in the murder of the Ndiga chief, Daniel Bbosa.
Authorities have begun examining the skulls to determine their age, gender and possible time of burial.
